SHRM’s Core Leadership Areas

There are seven areas SHRM has determined critical – or core – to the success of achieving its mission to Advance the Profession and Serve the Professional: College Relations, Diversity, Government Affairs, HR Certification Institute Certification, Membership, SHRM Foundation and Workforce Readiness. SHRM strongly encourages the inclusion of volunteer leadership roles on the chapter boards and state councils for each of these Core Leadership Areas (CLAs).

State councils and chapters are vital to this effort and can demonstrate success by working collaboratively with SHRM in defining goals, creating alignment between SHRM goals and state council/chapter goals and implementing effective support initiatives in these core leadership areas. Workforce Readiness

To build a strong foundation and benefit the chapter or state council through shared learnings, CLA volunteers should review the tools and resources available in the VLRC and participate in the CLA conference calls and webinars for their respective CLA. Participating in discussions and/or activities at the state council level extend the learnings available through the SHRM events. During these discussions — whether at the SHRM or state council levels — chapter members have an opportunity to represent their chapters, share best practices, and report the learnings back to the chapter board. It positions them well to lead the core leadership area within his/or chapter. State Council CLA volunteers have an opportunity to lead the core leadership area at the state level and engage chapter volunteers in the respective CLA.
