MaineHealth is seeking a Senior Benefit Specialist in Portland. This position is responsible for delivering high quality operational support to MaineHealth employees, peers and leaders. They provide guidance and act as the go-to person to one or more HR Representatives and/or Sr. HR Representatives, serving as a consultant on more complex matters related to benefits, leave, retirement, HR polices, HR systems, wellness, vendor relations, billing, and other programs as required. The Sr. Specialists must be able to identify service delivery gaps and make recommendations to implement solutions, as well as support the HR Representatives and Sr. HR Representatives with like responsibilities. S/he may lead project efforts that involve coordination with multiple vendors and/or MaineHealth staff as well as work as a liaison for communicating critical and timely information to the HR Solution Center Team. They must have the ability to think critically, move fluidly between tasks and self-manage to get time sensitive work completed, as well as be a resource for other members of the team. Strong MS Office skills are required, including Excel and PowerPoint, as well as other HRIS technologies utilized by MaineHealth. Strong analytical abilities are essential for benefit data analysis and problem solving.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional knowledge.
  • SHRM-CP/SCP or PHR/SPHR certification desired.
  • Minimum of four years of HR experience, ideally in the HR Benefits field.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical abilities.
  • Takes a logical, analytical approach to problem solving and pays close attention to detail.
  • Ability to use HRIS technology to gather information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office products, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with strong results/goal orientation.
  • Ability to make decisions and operate independently with respect to complex issues.
  • Professional and customer focused communication.
  • Working knowledge of ERISA, benefits, compensation and HR policies.
